Brolly - Umbrella Sharing Service Project
Based on own research conducted on SCAD Campus, aimed to learn about students’ needs that could be improved. Sudden rainfalls in Savannah is something that catches students off-guard, generating stress moments when commuting to class and defined as a bad experience.
Initial Research and Project Definition
-

Surveys
The survey showed us that even most of students own an umbrella they struggle or fail to carry it when needed. Most of people do not carry it in advance when is forecasted to rain later in the day.

Obervation Session
We conducted an observation session on a day that rain was forecasted from 11AM till 1 PM. We learnt that most students leaving the campus dorms for classes were wearing raincoats had umbrellas with them, but those returning were mostly dry or running from cover to cover. Object mapping allowed us to realize how their valuable items were close to them trying to protect them from water (backpacks, portolio folders, etc.)
As an output of the research and findings, we realized that students do not need a more ‘portable’ or ‘smart’ umbrella, we needed to provide cover from water, on demand
This can be achieved by implementing umbrella sharing services through dispensers or kiosks, between dorm buildings and other buildings where students go to class.
This solution should be free to use for students, but still should be communicated as a continuum of the SCAD student experience.

Project Prototype Concept
The kiosks would allow the students to take an umbrella with them by only using their SCAD Card. Free to use and with a fixed timeframe to return the umbrella to another kiosk in any of the locations available.
